What Is the Webster Technique? Pregnancy Chiropractic in Loveland, Explained

It's a gentle chiropractic check and adjustment of the pelvis, made for pregnancy. Here is what it is, what a visit looks like, and what it isn't.

What Is the Webster Technique? Pregnancy Chiropractic in Loveland, Explained

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment of the pelvis, made for pregnancy. Its goal is simple: help your pelvis stay balanced and move well while your body changes, so pregnancy is more comfortable on your low back, hips and pelvis.

It was developed by Dr. Larry Webster, a chiropractor who founded the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), and chiropractors who use it are trained and certified through that group. I’m certified in it, and I use it with expecting moms here in Loveland.

Why Pregnancy Is Hard on Your Back and Pelvis

Here’s the deal. During pregnancy your body makes a hormone called relaxin that loosens your ligaments to get ready for delivery. That’s exactly what it should do. It also means the joints in your pelvis are less stable than usual. Add a center of gravity that keeps moving forward every month, and it’s no surprise so many pregnancies come with low back pain, hip pain, pain in the front of the pelvis, or that sharp pulling feeling from the round ligaments.

When the pelvis isn’t moving the way it should, the muscles around it tighten up to guard and protect it. Your spine also protects your nerves, and your nerves control everything in your body. So keeping the pelvis and low back moving well isn’t only about pain. It’s about letting your body work the way it’s designed to while it does something pretty amazing.

What a Webster Technique Visit Looks Like in Loveland

It starts with a conversation about how your pregnancy is going and where you’re feeling it. Then I check how your pelvis and sacrum (the flat bone at the base of your spine) are moving, and look at the muscles and soft tissue around the pelvis, including the round ligaments in front.

The adjustment itself is gentle and specific. Positioning is adapted to your trimester so you’re genuinely comfortable on the table, and the touch is light. If something doesn’t feel right to you, we change it. You’re in charge of your care.

Our prenatal chiropractic page covers the full range of what expecting moms come in for, from sciatica to rib pain.

What the Webster Technique Is Not

I’ll be honest, there’s some confusion online, so let’s clear it up. The Webster Technique is not a method for turning a breech baby, and no chiropractor should promise you that. It doesn’t replace your OB or midwife either. Your prenatal care team runs your pregnancy. Our job is the pelvis, the spine and how you feel and function along the way.

Before starting chiropractic care, let your OB or midwife know. Most are glad to hear it.

When to Call Your OB or 911 Instead

Some symptoms during pregnancy are not a back problem and need your OB, midwife or the emergency room right away: vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking, a severe headache or changes in your vision, sudden swelling in your face or hands, severe or constant belly pain, regular contractions before 37 weeks, or your baby moving less than usual. Those come first, every time.

When Moms Usually Come In

Any trimester works. You can come in when the low back starts complaining, or early to stay ahead of it, which makes a lot of sense. Many patients continue care after the baby arrives, as the pelvis settles back down, and then the baby gets checked too. We see the whole family here, and the youngest patient I’ve adjusted was one day old.

This time of year adds its own challenge. Once the first ice shows up on Loveland sidewalks and parking lots, walking carefully with a shifting center of gravity takes real effort, and a pelvis that moves well helps.

Pair It With Pregnancy Massage

Both of our licensed massage therapists offer pregnancy massage in any trimester, side-lying with pillows for comfort. It pairs well with chiropractic care. You can read more on our massage therapy page.

You Don’t Have to Be in Pain to Get Checked

Feeling okay and functioning well aren’t always the same thing. An exam looks at how your spine and pelvis are moving and functioning, not only at pain. Active moms, athletes and busy parents get checked to stay at their best, and pregnancy is a great time to start.

If you’re new to our office, our New Patient Special includes a consultation with the doctor, an orthopedic and neurological exam, and a report of findings.
