A motorcycle crash sends force through your body with nothing around you to absorb it. Even a low-speed drop or a slide can wrench the neck, jam a shoulder or twist the low back, and adrenaline can hide it for days. The helmet that protects your head also adds weight your neck has to control when you go down.
First things first: head injuries, broken bones, road rash and anything that could be internal need a medical evaluation right away. Once you have been cleared, we examine your spine and the joints around it, document what we find and build a plan to get you moving again.
What We See Most
From the sudden stop, with the weight of a helmet on top.
From twisting, landing hard or going down with the bike.
From bracing with an arm or landing on the shoulder.
Strain across the upper and mid back from the impact.
Nerve irritation from the neck that shows up in the arms or hands.
Stiff necks and sore backs from long days on the bike, no crash required.
Our Approach
Motorcycle coverage works differently from car coverage. Colorado requires car policies to include medical payments (MedPay) coverage unless you turn it down, but that rule does not apply to motorcycle policies. Some riders carry it and some don’t, so what pays for care depends on your policy and on who caused the crash. Call us at (970) 800-3486 and we will help you sort out what applies. Either way, we document your care thoroughly from the start.
Riding season here runs from the Big Thompson Canyon to the Peak to Peak Highway, and long days in the saddle take a toll even without a crash. If your neck or back hurts after a ride, an exam is how to find out why.
We are on North Garfield Avenue in Loveland, about 15 minutes from Fort Collins and 10 from Berthoud. New here? See what to expect on your first visit and fill out your new patient forms online before you come in. Every care plan follows the same three phases of care.
Research
A few of the published studies behind how we approach this. Research describes groups of people, not a promise for any one person. Your exam tells us what applies to you.
Reviewing traffic-injury guidelines, researchers found whiplash recommendations included advice, exercise, early return to activity and mobilization or manipulation, and advised avoiding neck collars.
Wong JJ, Côté P, Shearer HM, et al. Clinical practice guidelines for the management of conditions related to traffic collisions: a systematic review by the OPTIMa Collaboration. Disabil Rehabil, 2015 · systematic review.
This traffic-injury collaboration's review of back pain guidelines found high-quality guidelines recommend education, exercise and manual therapy as first-line care, with spinal manipulation an option for acute pain.
Wong JJ, Côté P, Sutton DA, et al. Clinical practice guidelines for the noninvasive management of low back pain: A systematic review by the Ontario Protocol for Traffic Injury Management (OPTIMa) Collaboration. Eur J Pain, 2017 · systematic review.
Developed for traffic-injury care, this guideline says clinicians may consider education with exercise or multimodal care, including manipulation or mobilization, for grade I-II neck pain and associated disorders.

Yes. Long rides hold your neck and back in one position for hours, and an exam shows how your spine is moving and what is getting overloaded. You don't have to crash to get checked.
Any head injury with headache, confusion, dizziness or a lost moment needs a medical evaluation the same day before anything else.
